"Pull Your Finger Out!" and stay safe from fire (2008)
A new campaign launched in January 2008 by
Communities and Local Government is delivering the
stark message to 'Pull Your Finger Out' and check
your smoke alarm.
Fire
Kills, a publicity campaign aimed at reducing the
number of preventable deaths in house fires, has
produced a new advertising campaign to help
encourage people to check their smoke alarms more
regularly. Fronted by Julie Walters, the advert
highlights the devastating and potentially fatal
consequences of not testing your alarm often enough.
Running in England from
15 January to 9 March 2008, it shows the horrific
aftermath of a fire in the home with a burnt out
kitchen providing the backdrop to the scene. The sad
fact is that one in three smoke alarms fails to
operate in fires - mainly due to missing or non
working batteries.
Maintaining a smoke
alarm takes moments and can save lives.

Put it out. Right out! (2002)
Did
you know that more people die in smoking material
related fires that any other? Nearly a third of all
households in England include a smoker and these
households are nearly 35 per cent more likely to
have a fire than non-smoking homes.
In the UK between 2000 and 2005 there were on
average 132 deaths per year in accidental home fires
caused by smoking materials. January 2007 saw
the launch of a month-long Government and Fire and
Rescue Service campaign to warn people of the
dangers of smoking materials. The Fire Kills 'Put it
Out. Right Out' campaign showed how easily fires
can start from just one cigarette and how quickly
they can spread with tragic results.
